If you are a small business, you are likely trying to expand your customer base and ensure that you get as much business as possible in order to be successful. You might have hit upon the idea of using gift cards as a way to help your loyal customers tell their friends about your business. Your customers can give their friends gift cards to your business, and those people will be able to experience your store for the first time and hopefully tell their friends. However, you want to be sure that you are using gift cards as efficiently as possible. Here are some tips.

1. Try Talking to Your Credit Card Processor

Unless you want to make handmade gift cards that you process by hand and write on to show if they are used or not used, you are going to need to get some sort of processing system in place. For small businesses, the easiest and cheapest way to make sure that you get the gift card processing that you need is to use your current credit card processor. There are very few credit card processors that actually make a ton of money off of gift card transactions compared to the amount of money that they make off of credit card transactions. As a result, if you have been using their service for a long time, there is a great chance that processing the gift cards will be very cheap for you or even possibly free.

2. Provide Something to Go With the Card

When a customer buys a gift card, he or she is buying a gift. You are already getting off light by simply being able to make money by selling a small plastic card. You can entice customers to purchase your gift cards by also providing a small box, envelope, or bag for the gift card to go inside. This will allow the person who is buying the card to feel more as though they are buying a personal gift and encourage more people to actually use your gift card system.

Have your gift cards near some of your cheaper merchandise, preferably under $5 or $10. This will help encourage people to make these small purchases a part of their gift along with the gift card itself.

3. Offer Online Gift Cards

Finally, be sure that you are also offering online gift cards if you have an online store. People want everything to be as convenient as possible and being able to send a gift through email is extremely easy. Talk to your online credit card processor about making this happen.
